UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS M. D. ANDERSON CANCER CENTER BASIC SCIENCE RESEARCH BUILDING Houston, Texas
EEI provided peer review and commissioning services for this 18-story vivarium and research laboratory facility. This facility is located in Houston, with significant outdoor climatic conditions and stringent indoor environmental requirements. Given the owner's past experiences with large technically complicated projects, there was a significantly greater emphasis on design and construction quality assurance efforts for this project. The facility is comprised of 71% laboratory, office and interstitial; 21% vivarium; and 8% class rooms and conference rooms.
The building was constructed with redundancy and back-up for just about every system; and has the full complement of laboratory gas systems, manifolded HVAC systems, structured cabling for information technology systems and electrical power systems to ensure continuous and clean power for all aspects of a research environment.
During peer review activities, EEI and MDACC personnel formed an alliance to review the design criteria, they planned, discussed the issues and provided feedback to the design team. Many of the review comments and suggestions resulted in many modifications and refinements of the design. The commissioning scope of work included peer review, commissioning specifications, written functional test procedures and functional testing for all the facilities' M/E/P and IT systems.
