Completed in 1993 by Fentress Architects in Jefferson County (JeffCo), CO, the government center’s open and accessible design was inspired by the work of Thomas Jefferson. The striking facility needed to retain its appearance and quality while improving energy consumption. EEI provided support to JeffCo to establish performance criteria for the project and for selection of a design-build team to specify and install the replacement rooftop air handling units, centrifugal chillers, and cooling towers. Following EEI’s recommendations, the chilled water distribution system was also upgraded to variable flow for increased energy efficiency. EEI assisted JeffCo in establishing logistics for the work and performed peer reviews of the proposed retrofit designs, equipment selections, and control system upgrades. EEI also performed commissioning of the retrofitted systems to maximize operating performance, efficiency, and reliability for the next 25 years.
