Project Description

Sierra Elementary School (K-6) has completed a $17 million upgrade for Jefferson County Public Schools that has been years in the making. This second and final phase was perhaps the most dramatic and most needed.

A two-story, thirty-classroom building took shape just yards from what Sierra students and staff call “the bunker,” a 1970’s era holdover with few windows and lots of defects.

The design for the new addition was based on four principles: safety, security, collaborative learning and space for community involvement. The 50,000 SF addition increased the school capacity by 250 students and brought improved technology and comfort for students and staff.

Through EEI’s role as the District’s commissioning authority, we were instrumental in shaping the design of the mechanical systems to meet Jefferson County’s requirements. The implementation of our commissioning process greatly improved the quality of the mechanical systems and focused the construction team to deliver the a high quality project in time for the start of the school year. Important for an addition to an existing facility, EEI began work analyzing the operation of the existing school using on-site inspections and analysis of data from the Building Automation System.

Commissioned systems included:

  • Existing Building Operational Analysis
  • Rooftop Air Handling Units
  • Heating Hot Water System
  • Chilled Water System
  • VAV Distribution System
  • Exhaust Air System
  • Sump Pump
  • Domestic Water Recirculation
  • Building Automation System
  • Lighting and Day Lighting Controls
  • Fire Alarm System
  • Emergency Lighting
