St. Anthony Central Hospital is one of Denver’s oldest and most progressive hospitals. Founded by the Sisters of St. Francis, St. Anthony opened its doors in 1892. Prior to the construction of this replacement hospital, St. Anthony Central was a “land locked” 593-bed nonprofit Level I trauma center. St. Anthony West, located on 45 acres, is a replacement hospital for the 16-acre site of St. Anthony Central in Denver. St. Anthony West Hospital is a 672,800-SF, state-of-the art 222-bed Level I Trauma Center and Orthopedic specialty hospital.

A major light rail station was built adjacent to the St. Anthony West Campus for convenient public transport access from downtown Denver. Because St Anthony Hospital is a major Level I trauma center, the Department of Homeland Security has taken an interest in incorporating design features to support disaster preparedness, such as “surge” capability for disaster response, secure air supply to the building and robust operating capability during power outages.

The new St. Anthony Hospital was designed to earn the “Energy Star” rating. To meet this rating, energy consumption per square foot must be lower than 75% of the existing large acute care hospitals in the country. Unlike the LEED® and GGHC green building rating systems, Energy Star is based on objective energy usage criteria and is only awarded after the building’s energy bills prove its performance.

EEI Healthcare worked closely with the design team to establish the Engineered Systems Design Criteria for this project, including utility space planning and M/E/P master planning services. Our work addressed the systems and space needed to support the medical programs. EEI Healthcare conducted peer review services that ensure compliance with performance objectives and project budgets and was heavily involved with this project through completion and seasonal testing. EEI Healthcare has continued to work with St Anthony Hospital in the years following completion to optimize energy performance and support the operations staff.

The Orthopedic component of this facility opened nearly one year before the balance of the campus presenting significant MEP challenges which EEI was intimately involved in steering towards successful resolution.
