Project Description

Project Description

The newly-built academic building, also known as the Student Commons Building, has become a city and university landmark establishing a strong identity for the CU Denver campus.

With indoor and outdoor public spaces that reinforce the concept of an “urban boulevard” shared by the campus and the City of Denver, the new Academic Building embodies the exciting developments at the university. The building has received LEED® Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council.

The building is a 130,000 SF, five-story steel structure that includes a variety of classrooms, offices, large lecture halls and academic space to meet the growing needs of the university. It is home to several departments, such as student services, admissions, disability, and financial services. EEI was hired as the Commissioning Agent during the design phase of the project to ensure that the Student Commons Building satisfied various LEED® accreditation requirements, meets the intent of the Basis of Design (BoD), and has properly-trained maintenance staff. During the commissioning process, EEI resolved hundreds of issues and worked with outside contractors to fix several surprising lighting control issues.
