The new ITS building provides the University with its first properly designed and supported facility to house all of the IT resources that provide neighboring islands/campuses and O’ahu students with full access to information, communication, and distance learning opportunities throughout Hawai’i and beyond.
Systems and capabilities housed in the new ITS building include the University’s student information system, financial aid system, online learning system, financial management system, human resources information system, institutional email, institutional web sites, Internet and Internet2 access, and a modern digital communications system. The University also provides internet access for the Hawai’i State government.
The ITS building is designed to remain operable through most disasters and houses the University’s first Emergency Situation Room. This allows UH executive management to take advantage of the building’s highly available power and communications capabilities to handle institutional response to disasters from a centralized location.
The commissioning process for this project was successful in revealing and initiating improvement of issues at each step of the design and construction phases. The process also created a written record of the commissioning observation and recommendations. The Design and Construction Teams worked together to address issues when they were identified and few signification outstanding items remain. Functional testing activities resulted in a number of improvements and deficiency corrections in the installation or setup of mechanical systems or in the execution of the control sequences.
The UH ITS building is the first data center project in Hawai’i designed to meet the requirements of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Gold rating.
